A Sicilian aristocrat's clan is threatened with extinction as Garibaldi's followers fight for the unification of Italy. Spectacularly directed by Visconti, a Marxist aristocrat himself, the pros and cons of modernisation are beautifully explored with Burt Lancaster supreme as Prince Salina and Alain Delon his rebellious nephew.
