2004/05 Season

ETRE ET AVOIR

France 2002 (U) - 104 minutes
Subtitled

Directed by Nicolas Philibert

Ipswich Film Theatre - 14 February 2005 - 7.30pm

An enchanting documentary of school life in a rural French village. A single classroom with thirteen junior pupils of mixed ages is shown over an academic year, while the schoolmaster, soon to retire, is seen conentrating on each child in turn. Appealing youngsters learn lessons in gowing up.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: What a delightful film. I found it totally absorbing and an example of what education should be like; This is what teaching is all about. A truly wonderful film; Beautiful scenes. Very atmospheric. The countryside reflected the harmony in the classroom and what a fantastic teacher; Sweet and very different from our own dear schools. Astonishing lack of paperwork; Pedestrian, even soporific.
