THE HOUSE OF MIRTH
UK/USA 2000 (PG) - 140 minutes
Ipswich Film Theatre -
28 February 2005
- 7.30pm
Lily Bart (Gillian Anderson) knows that only marriage brings security even for a powerful dignified woman in New York's 1900 high society, where mirth gives way to money. One of the best adaptations of a classic novel (Edith Wharton's) because of its intensity where every word and gesture count.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Sixty years ago, this would have been a vehicle for Bette Davis. Speeded up of course but not so well done;
I really enjoyed the social comment - it really seemed to reflect life at that time;
Scenery and costumes wonderful - sad ending;
Brilliant depiction of why everyone was much happier when women knew their place. Well, apart from the women, obviously. But the moral of the tale is - DON'T PLAY BRIDGE;
Second Viewing - even more depressing when you know what will happen.
