GOOD BYE, LENIN!
Germany 2003 (15) - 121 minutes Ipswich Film Theatre -
10 January 2005
- 7.30pm
A loyal communist East German mother falls comatose at the collapse of the Berlin wall, so her caring son pretends with comical ingenuity that the East has triumphed. Though often funny, the film touches more deeply on divided families with a complex attitude to the two Germanys.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Wonderful. Moving, very funny, but with great depth. The Human spirit lives yet;
An affectionate (if distorted) look at life in the GDR;
Very well sustained. You almost believe it could have worked;
Often charming but too long and pretty unconvincing in its story line;
A good idea but untidy in its form.
