2004/05 Season

OSAMA

Afghanistan 2003 (12A) - 83 minutes
Subtitled

Directed by Siddiq Barmak

Ipswich Film Theatre - 22 November 2004 - 7.30pm

A 12 year old girl is casually given the name "Osama" to pass her off as a boy so she can earn money for her mother whose work as a doctor is forbidden by the repressive Taliban regime. The suspense is tangible as we empathise with "Osama" and her final unforgettable situation.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Amazing achievement. So much told in so few words; A very menacing film. I felt physically cold and numb at the end of this; Heartbreaking. What more can you say; Powerful. A numbing portrayal of inhumanity; Uncomfortable yet compulsive viewing.
