2005/06 Season
THE MOTHER
UK 2003 (15) - 112 minutes
Ipswich Film Theatre -
14 November 2005
- 7.30pm
An elderly couple go to visit their daughter in London where the father dies. The mother lingers, reluctant to return to her old life, and reaches for youth in the embrace of her son's decorator. A moving account of the struggle for affirmation in the face of old age and the selfishness of one's offspring.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
What a subject. So well done and the terrific set pieces. Colour, design, script. Food for thought;
A difficult subject bravely tackled. Anne Reid deserves the highest praise for her performance;
Liked the film but didn't like any of the characters;
Don't employ a builder called Darren;
Unconvincing characterisation and plot. Nasty self-obsessed people. Thank Heaven for the few laughs.
