THE WAY TO THE STARS
UK 1945 (U) - 109 minutes
Ipswich Film Theatre -
10 October 2005
- 7.30pm
The story of Halfpenny Field, an aerodrome in a corner of England during World War II, and the lives of the Allied airmen there. The film evokes a wartime stoicism in the face of loss with uncommon delicacy. Our tribute to John Mills.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Enduring and endearing. Deep characterisation;
A classic with beautiful modulated and nicely understated performances. May it never happen again;
Predictable, but a strong contrast of highs and lows and the music was a delight;
Possibly I'm too old to have found it a weepy. Possibly 60 years ago I wouldn't have had a dry eye. That poem, oh dear me, never;
Too much starch and stiff upper lip. Almost D for dire.
