Whisky Galore (1948) Whisky Galore (1948) Whisky Galore (1948)

2005/06 Season

WHISKY GALORE

UK 1948 (U) - 82 minutes
Directed by Alexander Mackendrick

Ipswich Film Theatre - 23 January 2006 - 7.30pm

A fantastic but wholly plausible tale of a ship full of whisky wrecked on a small Hebridean island during World War II. The local Customs and Excise man has his hands full as the islanders are determined to take advantage of the situation. A fast moving and well played Ealing comedy.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: The gentle British comedy has hardly dated and the cinematography was excellent. Ealing at its best; The sort of gentle Hokum we can't make anymore. Great score, too. Falky and whimsical; The ship must have had a few charms. It was stuck on the rocks, slipped sideways and disappeared upright; Lifted your spirits on a cold dreary Monday evening. Very amusing. Haven't seen a black and white film in years. Lovely community spirit in more ways than one; An enjoyable amusing oldie. Good to see the old actors. Joan Greenwood had a lovely Irish accent.
