Woman of the Dunes (1964) Woman of the Dunes (1964) Woman of the Dunes (1964)

2005/06 Season

WOMAN OF THE DUNES

Japan 1964 (15) - 127 minutes
Subtitled

Directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara

Ipswich Film Theatre - 13 February 2006 - 7.30pm

When a scientist from the city misses his last bus home from the beach, the offer to stay at the nearby village is a welcome relief. He soon finds that local kindness comes at a high price. With crystalline images and unsettling soundtrack, this a powerful haunting insight into self-preservation instinct.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Extraordinary. Full of imagery and metaphors; A captivating and unusual film about freedom and captivity. A mobile phone might have been useful; The sand must have played hell with the cameras; It puts a whole new complexion on picnics on the beach and sand in the sandwiches; Excellent cinematography, but singularly unpleasant theme, austere and gruelling. Looks good, but don't ask me to enjoy it.
