2006/07 Season

TSOTSI

South Africa 2005 (15) - 94 minutes
Subtitled

Directed by Gavin Hood

Ipswich Film Theatre - 5 February 2007 - 7.30pm

Set in the South African townships this is the story of a black youth gang led by Tsotsi, an orphan desensitised to violence. On stealing a car only to find the owner's baby inside, he gradually develops a sense of responsibility which leads to a growing relationship and ultimate sacrifice.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A terrific view of Soweto, story powerfully told. You had no need for subtitles to understand the emotions; A good tale of redemption as Hollywood has ever produced. Beautifully shot, briliantly acted and an excellent score; Very powerful. But what happened to Tsotsi after; Violent, dramatic, engaging, great music, if a bit improbable; The most profound and moving film I've seen for two seasons.
