2007/08 Season
A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
USA 2006 (PG) Hollywood Film Theatre -
3 March 2008
- 7.30pm
A radio show hosted by Garrison Keillor is about to close down and the final programme is performed by such sterling characters as two singing sisters, a cowboy duo and an elderly country singer. This was Altman's farewell party, with a star studded guest list.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
A script so sharp, you could cut yourself on it;
Very enjoyable. A bit self-indulgent, but good fun;
Strange little film. Bit too much bible belt for me. Classic Altman. Overlapping dialogue films made like jazz;
Would have been so much better without that jerk of a security man;
Beautifully filmed but truly dreadful. Schmaltzy and folksy, hammy and corny. All that's worst in American culture.
