2008/09 Season
AWAY FROM HER
Canada/UK/USA 2006 (12A) Hollywood Film Theatre -
27 April 2009
- 7.30pm
With a sterling performance by Julie Christie this tells of a couple's readjustment after forty years of marriage on discovering that the wife has Alzheimer's. Set in Ontario the film describes the wife's stay in a home specialising in the disease, where she gets to know another patient, with unexpected consequences.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
All the denial, grief and loss beautifully shown;
Intensely moving. Not only is Julie Christie's smile as alluring as it was in Billy Liar, her performance was worthy of the Oscar she didn't get;
Superb but still difficult to sit through. Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent were excellent;
A sensitive film subject well portrayed;
Tends to wallow in its profundity. Poorly paced at times.
