THE LIVES OF OTHERS

Germany 2006 (15)
137 minutes

Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

Hollywood Film Theatre - 6 April 2009 - 7.30pm

In the former GDR a Stasi officer is assigned to the surveillance of a supposedly subversive playwright and finds his life is transformed. Justly garlanded (55 wins, including the Oscar), this is an intense film thanks to its actors, not least the late Ulrich Muhe.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Best showing of the season. Grim but well worth it; A stunningly brilliant film and one of the best of all time in my opinion; Gripping and thought provoking. Loved the last line; Even the jokes were good. Beautifully understated and powerful in all respects. The complexity of man's spirit; Very atmospheric of East Germany and the regime there. Deep issues explored. Good story line maintained throughout.
