2008/09 Season
THE NIGHT OF THE SUNFLOWERS
Spain/Portugal/France 2006 (15) Hollywood Film Theatre -
15 September 2008
- 7.30pm
Examining the fall-out from an attempted rape in rural Cantabria, and adopting a narrative structure which adheres to character rather than chronology, Sánchez-Cabezudo's masterly first film paints a picture of village life that eschews the cosy nostalgia of many continental films and their imitators, opting instead for a rueful fatalism.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
A by now established formula, but entirely compelling, wonderful characterisiation and photography;
I liked all the twists and turns. Very well put together. Kept your interest. What a pity he got away with it;
Too long. Haunting music. Good in parts. Worthwhile staying with, though;
Thought provoking but, I hope, a totally unconvincing plot;
Very long, slow film. Boring.
