2008/09 Season
PASSPORT TO PIMLICO
GB 1949 (U) Hollywood Film Theatre -
5 January 2009
- 7.30pm
A post-war London district turns out to be part of Burgundy, resulting in the inhabitants creating their own ration-free zone, to the dismay of Whitehall (Basil Radford, Naunton Wayne). One of the first Ealing comedies, it features Margaret Rutherford and Stanley Holloway in a delightful "what if" situation.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Saw it on the original release. Much funnier than I remembered. Expecially liked the newsreel and the newspaper headlines;
Wonderful fantasy. Great photography. Even the acting was a little stiff at times. Wonderful;
Blinded by sentimental tears, impossible to assess dispassionately. Top marks for such an ingenious concept. Such a galaxy of archetypal stock characters;
What a treat. All those ancient darlings and wonderful creaking music;
Great story. Well worth seeing on the big screen but seemed longer than its 84 minutes.
