2008/09 Season
THE RED DESERT
Italy 1964 (15) Hollywood Film Theatre -
1 December 2008
- 7.30pm
Following on from his ‘trilogy of incommunicability’, and retaining the actress Monica Vitti, Antonioni’s first colour film uses the format creatively to foreground the hues suggested by the title. Set in an industrial Ravenna, the film charts the mental disintegration of a factory manager’s wife before and after she embarks on an affair.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Not really surprising that she had difficulty making sense of what was happening around her. So did I;
Visually beautiful and surreal. Very intense and at times tedious;
Opening operatic, photography and framing fantastic but ultimately a lot of song and dance about not very much;
Tedious, turgid twaddle;
It is quite something when a rabbit running into water is the highlight.
