2008/09 Season
THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING
Egypt 2006 (15) Hollywood Film Theatre -
23 February 2009
- 7.30pm
Through the lives of the inhabitants of a Cairo apartment building Marwan Hamed reveals the hypocrisy and corruption endemic in Eqyptian - and by extension Arab - society. A triumph that it was made at all, but to be done with such style and verve, this is a gem from a neglected film culture.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Enthralled for three hours. Just the sort of film I expect in a film society. Thank you;
Wonderfully atmospheric and true to the book. Really enjoyable;
I'm sure that there's a good film in there but so many film makers don't learn to edit;
Much too long. Interesting portrait of Cairo through the inhabitants of the building and lots of flawed characters and ambiguity but I was left feeling a bit lost.
