THE BAND'S VISIT

Israel/France/US 2007 (12A) 87 minutes Directed by Eran Kolirin

Hollywood Film Theatre - 28 September 2009 - 7.30pm An Egyptian band stranded in an Israeli town overcomes the expected obstacles and contrives to get along with its hosts. Denied the opportunity of a foreign language Oscar because an appreciable part of its screenplay is in English, this charming culture-clash comedy was a success on the festival circuit and avoids sentimentality or didacticism. AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A gem! Just one thing, they continued to subtitle even when spoken in English and I continued to read them; Delightful focus on feelings expressed but intense emotions nevertheless; Storyline left a bit to be desired, but it was funny, well observed and lovely to hear new languages to me; Is there something in the water? What was everyone laughing at? Not enough wit and charm to compensate for the fact that there was essentially no plot; Endless with a few moments of humour.
