2009/10 Season
THE GOOD GERMAN
US 2006 (15) Hollywood Film Theatre -
12 October 2009
- 7.30pm
This film, which has been often compared to Casablanca, features George Clooney as a war correspondent covering the Potsdam conference in 1945. A crooked army driver, his prostitute girlfriend and her 'wanted' husband complete this portrait of love in a Cold War climate, with corruption and double-dealing on the side.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
The black and white - perfection! So evocative of a period I didn't live through, but feel I did. It cast so long a shadow. A terrible, confusing middle in shades of grey, just as the reality must have been;
Expected them to die of the cigarette smoke at any moment;
Why was he "good"? Fantastic photography and production and great music but I couldn't follow the plot;
Bit of a triumph of style over content;
More of a pastiche than clever. Smart filming but strangely not that engaging.
