2009/10 Season
I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG
France/Germany 2008 (12A) Hollywood Film Theatre -
4 January 2010
- 7.30pm
A woman arrives to stay with her sister's family, and gradually it becomes clear to us that she has been in prison for murder. Claudel offers up human drama on many fronts, but anchored around the brittle, wounded performance of Kristin Scott Thomas as Juliette. As a study of sisterhood, the film gains equal credit for Zylberstein's younger, uncomprehending Lea.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Disturbing and challenging and beautifully told;
A very well made and acted film but the theme uncomfortably goes some way towards justifying euthanasia;
Very moving depiction of the loss of a child. Impact that lasts;
Very moving but the ending a bit heavy handed;
Although the mercy killing twist was quite moving, I think it's a cop-out.
