2009/10 Season
TOKYO SONATA
NL/HK/Japan 2008 (12A) Hollywood Film Theatre -
30 November 2009
- 7.30pm
Stripped of pride and status when he is made redundant, established employee Ryuhei hides the secret from his family and vainly tries to retain authority over his sons. Often associated with the Japanese horror field, Kurosawa here delivers a poignant and discreet portrait of a family's disintegration before harsh economic realities.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
A triumph! A film that "showed" rather than "told" with the most sublime subtlety;
Uplifting, confusing, lovely;
Wierd. It all unravelled, descended into farce and then ended happily;
And I thought it was the British who were mixed up;
The Debussy was good.
