Waltz with Bashir (2008) Waltz with Bashir (2008) Waltz with Bashir (2008)

2009/10 Season

WALTZ WITH BASHIR

Israel/Germany/France 2008 (18)
90 minutes

Directed by Ari Folman

Hollywood Film Theatre - 12 April 2010 - 7.30pm

Folman's animated film treatment of the 1982 Lebanese refugee camp massacre by Israeli soldiers is dredged out of the director's own traumatised memories and those of his interviewees. To re-enact would be invidious, hence the format, which deploys three different animation techniques to both beautiful and shattering effect.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Excellent both as anti-war film and exploration of memory; Technically outstanding. Horrible but gripping story. I'm glad there are Israelis prepared to face up to their past. There's hope yet; What can one say? Terrifying and amazing animation! Exhausting; He has found an astonishing way to tell this awful story. One wonders how the makers of this film have fared in Israel since; Animation was well done, but there was not enough impact to hold one's attention. Disappointing.
