2010/11 Season
DEPARTURES
Japan 2008 (12A) Ipswich Film Theatre -
27 September 2010
- 7.30pm
Surprise winner of the 2009 Foreign Language Oscar, this is the life-affirming 'coming-to-maturity' film about a young cellist who answers a job advert entitled, simply, 'Departures' and finds himself working as an undertaker's assistant, to which he devotes the same patient attention.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
A beautiful film beautifully made. Amusing, gentle and thought provoking. Would want to see again;
Brilliant acting, brilliant film! So little dialogue but so much said. Bizarrely enjoyable;
Japanese cinema gives us another timeless story full of beauty and emotions ranging from humour to sadness;
A slow start but thoroughly enjoyed it. A real taste of back street Japan;
Such a close examination of death is unusual and makes for uncomfortable viewing. A touch sentimental but worthwhile. Nice score.
