M (1931) M (1931) M (1931)

2010/11 Season

M

Germany 1931 (PG)
110 minutes

Directed by Fritz Lang

Ipswich Film Theatre - 7 February 2011 - 7.30pm

A child killer stalks the streets, and the underworld vies with the police in tracking him down and meting out justice. Lang brings elements of expressionism and film noir together. He provides a three-dimensional psychopath and bold applications of the new sound technology.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: An old film with an up to date theme. The acting was superb; The original vigilante film. Hasn't aged in the last 80 years. Notable for the smoking, as for the time; The most memorable eyes in the History of Cinema; A little hard to watch these old films. Slow at the beginning but wonderful drama, beautifully lit faces. "M" was a terrific face; An abrupt ending and some rather strange silent movie scenes but a stunning portrayal of mob violence.
