2010/11 Season
THE RED SHOES
UK 1948 (U) Ipswich Film Theatre -
9 May 2011
- 7.30pm
Moira Shearer plays an up and coming dancer, who, together with a young composer, has her career manipulated by a ballet impresario. He insists they give themselves solely to their art, with tragic consequences. Enchanting ballet sequences complement Hans Christian Andersen's magical tale.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Superb dancing against a background of romantic intrigue. Rather melodramatic ending;
Masterpiece. Superb colour, camerawork and a stunning score. Perfect;
Highly original scenes on occasions. Red shoes sequence brilliant. Bit long;
Nice TV film for a wet Sunday afternoon but a bit soppy;
Ballet on film? Much too 2D and flat, like jerky human puppets. Some hilarious moves early on, like jumping one-legged frogs.
