2010/11 Season
TOKYO STORY
Japan 1953 (U) Ipswich Film Theatre -
1 November 2010
- 7.30pm
Perhaps the most celebrated of the director's later films, this is like many of them, a chamber piece about family relationships. An elderly couple visit their children in the big city, but they are reglected or ignored. It is the detailed observation that yields irony and pathos.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Perhaps a hard film to rate so soon after viewing. More direct than I'd expected by reputation and more candid, but definitely as thought-provoking and relevant;
Very beautiful. Great dramas passing by almost unnoticed by the mundane activities of working lives;
The youth of today, eh! Erratic and illegible subtitles were a distraction;
Very slow, especially the first hour, but once the children showed their true colours, I did feel sorry for them;
This was not a film for me, poor acting, extremely slow. I persevered but felt no choice but to leave early.
