The White Ribbon (2009) The White Ribbon (2009) The White Ribbon (2009)

2010/11 Season

THE WHITE RIBBON

Germany/Aust/France/Italy 2009 (15)
144 minutes

Directed by Michael Haneke

Ipswich Film Theatre - 21 March 2011 - 7.30pm

The schoolmaster of a German village relates how, prior to WW1, certain unpleasant incidents occurred which seemed to be traceable to the children. Michael Haneke's Palme d'Or winning film is one in which thoughtful Europeans can ponder the crimes of their fathers.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Still waiting for the ending. Very atmospheric; Very good as a study in social history of the time. It would be nice to see part two to answer all the questions raised in part one; Like the bad dreams of childhood, frightening and unexplained. Horrifyingly engross; A dark film with sinister undertones unresolved at the end but very involving and strangely believable; I'd have to watch it again to confirm my idea of what I've just watched. But I can't really see that happening.
