THE ILLUSIONIST
UK/France 2010 (PG) Ipswich Film Theatre -
2 April 2012
- 7.30pm
A French illusionist finds himself out of work and travels to Scotland where he meets a young girl. Their subsequently shared experiences seal their contrasting fates. The creator of Belleville Rendez-Vous restores the dead to life in this captivating animated realisation of a Jacques Tati screenplay.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Brilliant animations, wit, pathos and nostalgia in equal measure;
A very fitting way to show the demise of the music halls;
Artwork reminiscent of The Aristocats and captured the character of Edinburgh beautifully. Story instantly forgettable, though;
Technically very impressive but the story was not all that gripping;
Wonderful visuals. A pity the content didn't make them.
