2011/12 Season

THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII

UK 1933 (U)
97 minutes

Directed by Alexander Korda

Ipswich Film Theatre - 24 October 2011 - 7.30pm

Academy Award winning Charles Laughton in an over the top performance as the king who beheaded his second wife and acquired four more. With tongue in cheek humour this visually rich serving of lusty English history revived a floundering British film industry.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: It's hard to believe that this film is nearly 80 years old. Laughton is superb, but Donat's performance is thoroughly modern and shows the way ahead; A fascinating period piece, wonderful. Costume and sets, incredible craft; Hilarious, but possibly for the wrong reasons; Film history it may be, but tedious, tedious, tedious; Blackadder School of History without the laughs. Dire.
