Sweet Smell of Success (1957) Sweet Smell of Success (1957) Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

2011/12 Season

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

USA 1957 (PG)
96 minutes

Directed by Alexander Mackendrick

Ipswich Film Theatre - 23 April 2012 - 7.30pm

Starring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster, this tells of a devious and despicable press agent who helps a New York columnist to destroy his sister’s romance. Decadent characters and photographic detail provide a moody and brassy melodrama of journalistic corruption.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Outstanding moral and artistic film. Should be compulsory viewing for News International staff; A study in megalomania and repressed incestious desire; Remarkable for the female stereotypes; Brash, ugly, frenetic and implausable. Very American; An oversimplistic plot with wooden acting even worse than I remember it from the first viewing.
