Life in the Bengal countryside is difficult for Apu and his family, but the child observes and appraises. This landmark film introduced the West to an India it had never seen, and announced the arrival of a talent to rival Renoir and Rossellini.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS: The sort of film I joined the Society for; A revelation! Surprised how much I enjoyed this film; So many dreary depressing films this year; Did I really watch a classic?
