2014/15 Season
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM
USA 1955 (15) Ipswich Film Theatre -
23 February 2015
- 7.30pm
Film censors refused to categorise Preminger’s unflinching view of Eisenhower’s America. Sinatra is Frankie Machine, former Chicago card dealer and heroin addict, out of prison and hoping to make it as a jazz drummer. Sinatra’s performance and Elmer Bernstein’s score were Oscar nominated.
A copy of the film was not received in time for the presentation. As an alternative, the Society presented Kiss Me, Stupid (1964).
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Good substitute – dropped in and got lost in the plot;
Typical Billy Wilder! Very witty and amusing;
The parrot was very good and Kim Novak pretty;
First time I’ve ever seen morbid jealousy portrayed as a comedy;
Oh, good Lord, that was awful.
