Belle de Jour (1967) Belle de Jour (1967) Belle de Jour (1967)

2014/15 Season

BELLE DE JOUR

France 1967 (X)
100 minutes

Directed by Luis Buñuel

Ipswich Film Theatre - 22 September 2014 - 7.30pm

Perhaps the most celebrated of the master surrealist’s films depicts the inner life of a married but frigid haute bourgeoise, who finds refuge through self-abasement in a maison close with a most particular clientele. But where does reality end and fantasy begin? The presentation begins with the short film Notes on Blindness: Rainfall.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A marvellous film which has worn well. I’m still not sure about what to believe; It was made in a different age – why did she stay with him; Loved the 60s knitwear at the ski resort at the start of the film. Forgot to bring my dirty mac; Started with bells and finished with bells, not sure about the middle; Shockingly boring – best part was the gangster being shot.
