Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Man with a Movie Camera (1929)

2014/15 Season

MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA

USSR 1929 (U)
68 minutes

Directed by Dziga Vertov

Ipswich Film Theatre - 26 January 2015 - 7.30pm

A film maker records the citizens at work and play, and films himself doing it, finally showing his film to the workers. An innovative documentary, shot in Kiev, Vertov’s personal vision is both a masterpiece of montage and a city film to rank alongside People on Sunday and Berlin: Symphony of a Great City. The presentation begins with the short film Unravel.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A brilliant artwork. Surely only in a Soviet or Russian movie could scenes of trams be so balletic; Stark contrasts and broken monotony reflects humanity in an original and thought provoking way; Brilliant filming – way ahead of the UK! A bit long; Soviet realism – great cure for insomnia; Historic cinema boring.
