2014/15 Season
THE GREAT BEAUTY
Italy/France 2013 (15) Ipswich Film Theatre -
12 January 2015
- 7.30pm
Successful novelist and arts critic, Jep Gambardella, darling of the Rome intelligentsia, strolls along the Tiber and presides over society gatherings of the rich elite. But his novel was written decades ago, and he secretly yearns for a lost teenage love. Sorrentino’s most impressive work yet is a compendium of Italian cinema.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
The second viewing was as fresh as the first time – Italians have style, the music, the script, the cinematography – everything was pure style;
The beauty and frailty of life – beautiful music and setting;
Life can be lonely even when you have many friends but moments in life make it worthwhile;
Interesting but self-indulgent. But music fantastic and singing superb;
Nicely shot, one or two lighter moments but on the whole, self-indulgent. Could have done with being an hour shorter.
