2016/17 Season
THE WELL-DIGGER'S DAUGHTER
France 2011 (Uncert) Ipswich Film Theatre -
3 October 2016
- 7.30pm
Actor-director Auteuil continues his love affair with Pagnol with this remake of the author’s self-directed 1940 version. The story takes place in characteristically rustic Provence and concerns a widower’s need to find a home for his unmarried daughter’s baby, when her suitors go off to war.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Magnificent performance from Daniel Auteuil;
One of the best films at IFT for some time;
Very well wrought. Even the subtitles were better than they often are;
First half very good – second half romantic melodrama – typical Pagnol;
Auteuil took a very moving and sweet story and made it very appealing. However the characterisation of the majority of the female roles was weak. An excellent Félipe and Monsieur Mazel.
