IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT

US 1967 (12)
108 minutes

Directed by Norman Jewison

Ipswich Film Theatre - 22 January 2018 - 7.30pm

Rod Steiger, playing police chief Gillespie, won the Oscar® for Best Actor. Sidney Poitier gives a notable, characteristically dignified performance as Philadelphia detective Virgil Tibbs, who misses his train home. In the throes of a murder investigation, the good citizens of Sparta, Mississippi, wish to remind Mr Tibbs that they see him differently… The presentation begins with the short film Elders (2015).

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A balanced and unbiased portrayal of a very different period in history. Modern cinema could learn a thing or two; Good old fashioned film. Nice to see it on the big screen; Brilliant on so many levels, wonderfully cast; A decent story but a bit drawn out; Poitier was wonderful but so of the time.
