2017/18 Season
SON OF SAUL
Hungary 2015 (15) Ipswich Film Theatre -
5 March 2018
- 7.30pm
Winner of last year’s Foreign Language Oscar, and a first feature project for its director, this is the story of a Sonderkommando Jew at Auschwitz who turns aside from the living to bury the body of what may have been his son. Confined within the frame of a 1.37:1 aspect ratio, we follow his progress at arm’s length throughout. The presentation begins with the short film Allan Baudoin - Made in London (2017).
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Sound was superb. Very hard to watch, very hard to look away;
Brutal. Annoying handheld camera. History lesson;
Horrific but convincing direction and acting;
A brave attempt at an almost unfilmable subject. A claustrophobic documentary style with a lack of characterisation;
It feels wrong to score this film. Difficult to watch but very well made.
