The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

2017/18 Season

THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

France 1964 (A)
91 minutes

Directed by Jacques Demy

Ipswich Film Theatre - 14 May 2018 - 7.30pm

What distinguishes this story of young lovers separated by Algerian war is the fact that it is a music drama in which there are no pauses for dialogue at all. Michel Legrand’s score and the lush colour cinematography have long endeared it to the public. Now a wonderful time capsule, screening in a new digital copy.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A visually enthralling movie and an expertly presented story; What a treat. Didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. Good to see “flabbergasted” in a subtitle; Would have worked better as a silent film; Nice enough film, but not much plot. Format of all singing monotonous and really only one great tune; Overkill with that wretched song. And she didn’t pay for the petrol.
