City Lights (1931) City Lights (1931) City Lights (1931)

2018/19 Season

CITY LIGHTS

US 1931 (U)
87 minutes

Directed by Charles Chaplin

Ipswich Film Theatre - 17 December 2018 - 7.30pm

Chaplin’s first film after the coming of sound is still a ‘silent’ in aesthetic terms, though of course benefiting from an on-film soundtrack written by the director. The film concerns a tramp’s love for a blind flower-girl, who confuses him with his millionaire fair-weather friend. The presentation begins with the short film The Silent Child (2017).

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: I didn't realise a Chaplin film could be so funny. The combination of short and main features worked very well; Good to hear the members laughing; Sentimental rubbish, but wonderful; A great pioneer overlooked; Dreadful old nonsense but not without its redeeming features.
