2018/19 Season

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

UK 1967 (U)
168 minutes

Directed by John Schlesinger

Ipswich Film Theatre - 25 March 2019 - 7.00pm

A distinctive, big screen adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s late 19th century novel. Nicolas Roeg’s cinematography oozes 1960s nostalgia for rural life and mores – that never were? Julie Christie plays headstrong landowner Bathsheba Everdene, courted by Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp. This film will start at 7.00pm.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: A near perfect film. My cat was called Gabriel after I saw this film the first time; Beautifully shot, gentle and thoroughly engaging; Rather clunky, moving from set piece to set piece, and once Troy plays a significant part, more than slightly bonkers; An average film damaged by its extreme length; Pointless scenes thrown in serving little or no purpose. And Troy’s character was too inconsistent.
