2018/19 Season
TAXI TEHRAN
Iran 2015 (12) Ipswich Film Theatre -
20 May 2019
- 7.30pm
The authorities banned Jafar Panahi from making films. He responded by making This Is Not a Film in his flat, and follows that with a concealed camera ‘video diary’ of himself in his taxi. The various rides he gives, apparently gratis, tell all that needs to be told about life in contemporary Iran. The presentation begins with the short film Made in London: Catarina Riccabona (2017).
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Perfect minimally plotted film in defiance of the Ayatollahs;
No beginning and no end. Just human situations and a message of quiet defiance;
Interesting to see another side of life. Won't be rushing to book a holiday in Tehran;
Sort of gripping in the end but the intrusive, incomprehensible dialogue became tiresome;
Not the best foreign film we have had.
