A MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN

David Clare
CHAIRMAN

Welcome back to a new season, still in our familiar home, but with a new host, Hollywood Cinemas Ltd. I am very grateful to them for making the transition so easy for us. You will notice one change if you haven’t visited the cinema over the summer, and that is the comfy new seating. This does mean that we have had to reduce the membership slightly, so get your application in early.

The other major change this year, of course, is the presence of my mug on this page. I must say that Neil’s is a hard act to follow. He was a super chairman and remains a close friend; I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that he is sorely missed at committee meetings.

Our programme is, as in the past, based significantly on the response to our audience questionnaire and maintains a balance between English and foreign-language films. Our aim is to privilege the seldom seen film over the tried and tested, though there is the occasional injection of a popular favourite. If anything the 2007/08 season has more quirks in it than usual.

Volver is a film about a woman in unhappy circumstances, while Venus, Billy Liar and Little Miss Sunshine give prominence to their male characters’ concerns. All these films handle their themes in an individual way that merits their inclusion.

We have brought back our silent film feature, though on this occasion it is with the original Movietone music track as restored by Twentieth Century Fox, and not with pianist as advertised earlier. This year it is Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, an unusually European Hollywood production, also shot for sound, famous for its night-time cinematography and deep-focus compositions.

Finally there are a number of films of somewhat grislier theme, such as Kontroll, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Ring to take us in a direction we haven’t often followed in the past.

I am looking forward to the season. Our secretary, Jean Hill, and I are usually on the door and do hope to welcome many past members again, as well as make the acquaintance of newcomers.

Subscriptions are rising to £30 for full adult membership and £15 for students, to make up for the reduction in membership from reduced seating capacity. Brochures will be out in August, on display at the cinema and at the Tourist Information Centre, and sent to past members a fortnight in advance of this. If you wish to be on the mailing list, please contact Trudi Keeble, Membership Secretary on 01473 787165.

Membership £30.00 - Student £15.00
Guest £5.00 - Student £2.50
