A MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN

David Clare
CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the Society’s 76th season and a line-up which, at £2.30 per film, we still think represents excellent value for money and an appetising assortment of pleasures cinematic from around the world.

As you will have seen, we have a new brochure and booking procedure debuting this year, with membership available to all simultaneously, but existing members still being sent a brochure by mail as a courtesy. It was felt that marketing the Society as early as possible in July would give us optimum exposure over the summer period, and carried no drawbacks for our loyal members.

I would like to salute my committee, who have helped compile and implement another stimulating selection of films, as well as our members, whose questionnaire choices gave rise to eight 'popular' titles in the programme. These are designated by a tick in the brochure and programme notes (distributed at start of season).

And what of our programme? I am happy to say we have a pair of films (Theeb and Lebanon) which probe the antecedents of Middle Eastern politics, as well as some strong European titles in The Grump and Force Majeure (Scandinavia), Amour (France) and Marshland (Spain) in this year of momentous political change. One of the strengths of a good film society programme is to remind us of the things we have in common across the world, rather than those that divide us. All the President’s Men also taps in to the aftermath of a presidential election in a way that could prove timely. Finally, I am personally looking forward to seeing an old favourite, The Third Man, in a spanking new transfer. It is possible to see parallels in just about everything, but frankly, a story about an American fantasist out of his depth in European politics and gulled by a corrupt businessman has just about as many resonances as you need at the moment.

We show our films at the Ipswich Film Theatre, and benefit from the best projection expertise and facilities in Ipswich. Nearly all our films this year are DCP (hi-def digital projection) and one 35mm (Nine). If you wish to join for our very reasonable £38 subscription (Students £19), there are three possible routes: download and print off the application form and send a cheque, or select one of the electronic payment options. Brochures can also be found at the Ipswich Film Theatre, Library, Tourist Office and a number of other public venues around town. Remember, though: this is a package deal, and admission to individual titles is only possible as a guest, and then not for the first show of the season. Book early to avoid disappointment, in any case before September.
