The Battle of Algiers (1966) The Battle of Algiers (1966) The Battle of Algiers (1966)

2007/08 Season

France/Italy 1966 (15)
121 minutes - Subtitled

Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo

Hollywood Film Theatre - 18 February 2008 - 7.30pm

Between 1954 and 1959 the FLN in Algeria conducted a terrorist campaign or war of liberation, depending on one's point of view against the French colonial authorities. This superb film charts the progress of that war as it affected the capital, mixing dramatic and documentary techniques in a truly galvanising way.

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Riveting, committed political drama. Uncomfortably pertinent; A good contrast between the individuals in the story and the effect on the community; The real strength of the film is that if it were made today, it would be little different; Very clever blending of drama and documentary, and very topical; Interesting and very watchable. It continually did not drag.
