2007/08 Season
THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS
France/Italy 1966 (15) Hollywood Film Theatre -
18 February 2008
- 7.30pm
Between 1954 and 1959 the FLN in Algeria conducted a terrorist campaign – or war of liberation, depending on one's point of view – against the French colonial authorities. This superb film charts the progress of that war as it affected the capital, mixing dramatic and documentary techniques in a truly galvanising way.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
Riveting, committed political drama. Uncomfortably pertinent;
A good contrast between the individuals in the story and the effect on the community;
The real strength of the film is that if it were made today, it would be little different;
Very clever blending of drama and documentary, and very topical;
Interesting and very watchable. It continually did not drag.
