2010/11 Season
A SERIOUS MAN
USA/UK/France 2009 (15) Ipswich Film Theatre -
4 April 2011
- 7.30pm
Set in the American suburban Midwest of the 1960s, this is a sympathetic portrait of Larry, a family man in crisis, whose life starts to unravel when his wife leaves him. The characters and their Jewish culture fall prey to the mocking humour characteristic of a Cohen movie.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
One long shaggy dog story. Distracting microphone in at least three scenes. Beautifully performed by a very talented cast;
Amusing and provoking in equal measures. Great music. Very enjoyable;
Is there a sequel? What happened to Arthur? Quirky, odd-ball, great cinena;
Very poor projection. I felt no sympathy for any of the characters. They all got what they deserved - hell;
It managed to retain my attention but only because it was so awful. Totally alien, some mild amusement but very heavy weather. However, of its type, well made.
103 minutes
